Self-drive vs Guided Safari: Pros and Cons

One of the biggest decisions when planning a safari is whether to drive yourself or travel with a professional guide. Both can be wonderful, and many travellers combine them.

Best countries for self-drive

  • South Africa: Kruger, the Kgalagadi, Addo and Pilanesberg have good roads, rest camps and clear rules. See our Kruger self-drive guide.
  • Namibia: Etosha and long road trips through deserts. See our Namibia itinerary.
  • Botswana: for experienced 4×4 drivers, Moremi, Chobe and the Central Kalahari. See our Moremi guide.
  • Other options: Zambia’s South Luangwa and Zimbabwe’s Hwange for experienced drivers.

Self-drive is less common in Kenya and Tanzania, where guided safaris are the norm.

Why choose a guide

  • Guides spot animals you would miss, understand behaviour and anticipate action.
  • Private reserves and concessions allow off-road driving, night drives and walking only with guides.
  • You can relax and focus on watching.

Combine the two

Many travellers self-drive in Kruger for a few days, then spend two or three nights at a private lodge with guides. In Namibia, you can self-drive and book guided drives at Etosha or activities in conservancies.

Self-drive tips

  1. Buy a good map or app and a local wildlife guidebook.
  2. Drive slowly and stop often: most sightings come to those who wait.
  3. Ask at camps and check sightings boards.
  4. Follow park rules: speed limits, gate times and never leaving your vehicle.
  5. Consider booking a guided drive on your first day to learn tips.
