The hoatzin is a strange, prehistoric-looking bird of South American wetlands, with a spiky crest and blue face. Its unique digestive system and clawed chicks make it one of the most unusual birds on Earth.
Interesting facts
- The hoatzin is the only bird that digests leaves by fermenting them in its crop, like a cow.
- Fermentation gives it a manure-like smell, earning it the name ‘stinkbird’.
- It is the only living member of its family.
- It is the national bird of Guyana.
- Hoatzins are weak fliers and clamber clumsily through branches.
- They live in noisy groups along rivers and lakes.
Behaviour
Hoatzins live in groups in vegetation overhanging water. They spend much of the day resting while leaves ferment in their crops.
Breeding and young
Hoatzins nest over water in cooperative groups, with helpers assisting the parents. They lay two or three eggs.
Threats and conservation
The species is common, although it is sensitive to habitat loss along rivers.
