Every year, as Sri Lanka’s dry season takes hold, wild Asian elephants from the surrounding forests converge on the shrinking Minneriya reservoir, an ancient tank built in the 3rd century AD. At its peak, the Gathering can bring together a few hundred elephants, one of the largest assemblies of Asian elephants anywhere. Nearby Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park share the same elephant population.

The Gathering
- As water dries up in the surrounding forests, elephants move to the reservoir shores, where fresh grass grows on the exposed lake bed.
- You can watch family herds with calves, young males sparring and bulls bathing, often at close range. See our Asian elephant profile.
- The exact timing and location depend on rainfall and water levels. Elephants move between Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu, and local drivers know where they are.
Other wildlife
Toque macaques, grey langurs, sambar, spotted deer, water buffalo and, rarely, leopards and sloth bears. Birds include painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, grey-headed fish eagles and many waders.
How safaris work
- Jeep safaris are run from Habarana, Sigiriya and nearby towns, mostly in the afternoon, when elephants come out to the grasslands.
- Your driver and hotel will advise which park is best that day.
- Park entry fees are charged per person, plus vehicle and service fees.
Responsible viewing

Combining with the Cultural Triangle
Minneriya lies in Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, close to Sigiriya rock fortress, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla’s cave temples and Anuradhapura. It combines easily with a trip to Yala for leopards and Mirissa for blue whales.
