Kaikōura, a small town on the north-east coast of New Zealand’s South Island, is one of the best places in the world to see sperm whales. Just offshore, the Kaikōura Canyon plunges more than 1,000 metres, bringing deep-water squid and fish close to the coast. Male sperm whales feed here year-round, and the area is also rich in dolphins, seals and seabirds.

Sperm whales
- Male sperm whales, which can reach about 16 to 18 metres, feed in the canyon year-round. See our sperm whale profile.
- Boat tours use hydrophones to listen for their clicks and find them when they surface to breathe. After about 10 minutes at the surface, they dive, showing their tail flukes.
- Whale Watch Kaikōura, the main operator, is owned by the local Māori community, Ngāti Kurī.
- Whale-watching flights by plane or helicopter offer a view of the whole whale from above.
Other marine life
- Dusky dolphins: large, acrobatic pods, especially from about October to April. Licensed tours offer swimming with dolphins.
- Hector’s dolphins: small and rare, sometimes seen near the coast.
- Humpback whales (June to July), orcas (occasionally, especially December to March) and blue whales (rarely).
- New Zealand fur seals: colonies at the Kaikōura Peninsula’s Point Kean and Ohau Point.

The 2016 earthquake
A magnitude 7.8 earthquake in November 2016 lifted parts of the seabed and coastline by several metres and cut roads for months. The town recovered, and whales and dolphins remained.
