The Varanger Peninsula, in Finnmark in Norway’s far north-east, sits where Europe meets the Arctic and Siberia. It is one of Europe’s top birding destinations, with Arctic species that are hard to see elsewhere: king and Steller’s eiders on the winter sea, huge seabird colonies on Hornøya, and Arctic waders and owls on the tundra in spring.

Winter and early spring: the eiders
- In late winter and early spring, king eiders and Steller’s eiders gather in the harbours of Båtsfjord and Vardø, often only metres away.
- Floating hides in Båtsfjord harbour allow photographers to shoot eiders at water level.

Late spring and summer: seabirds and tundra

- Tundra birds: Arctic waders such as red-necked phalaropes, bar-tailed godwits and Temminck’s stints, plus long-tailed skuas, Lapland buntings and bluethroats.
- Owls: hawk owls and, in good lemming years, snowy owls.
- The midnight sun allows birding around the clock from mid-May to late July.
Other wildlife
Reindeer, Arctic foxes (rarely), otters, and seals and whales offshore.

Getting there
